Dia 57 - Sofia III

Long walking. Longas caminhadas.

sunny 28 °C

Today I went walking through Vitosha street, wishing to go to Mina's church that could be interesting, since interesting places in the center of the I had seen almost all of them.

Fist stop: National Palace of Culture'
I had been here before, but I didn't go inside since I believed that this place it would be a shopping center (mall).

After climbing a mountain I found Mina's Church, that it was closed for repairs after some pishings actions.

Feeling dissapointed since I tought that this church would be an ancient building.
But anyway it was a goal to climb one mountain and go walking almost outside the city in a beautiful day of European spring, (almost summer)

Well this was my morning, now looking for place to eat, some typical Bulgarian dishe, I found a familiar restaurant, and I choose one of the foods that I didn't know what it would be because it was just in Bulgarish.

It was named Copriva with rice, copriva it is a kind of spinach, I eat mixed with yougourt, that it is the way to eat this food. Very Nice.

After a relax time in the B and B until 4 PM, I went outside to walk.

I went walking following the Tram Rails that leads to popular area in Sofia

I had another lunch since the copriva lunch make me hungry again, this time I went after some greek food that I had before.

Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria and the heart of the country as well. The city is a cultural, administrative and industrial centre and its motto definitely deserves to be “It grows, but does not age”. Sofia is the biggest city in Bulgaria. It is surrounded by the Balkan Mountains Range to the north, the Lozen Mountain to the south-east, the Mountain Vitosha to the south and the Lyulin Mountain to the southwest.
It is at 550 meters above sea level.

Sofia is linked by international routes with the capitals of Europe, and through Istanbul and Ankara, with the Middle East.

Rotunda de Saint George

Ротонда „Свети Георги“ Rotonda "Sveti Georgi") is an Early Christian red brick rotunda that is considered the oldest building in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is situated behind the Sheraton Hotel, amid remains of the ancient town of Serdica.

Built by the Romans in the 4th century AD, it is mainly famous for the 12th-14th century frescoes inside the central dome. Three layers of frescoes have been discovered, the earliest dating back to the 10th century. Magnificent frescoes of 22 prophets over 2 metres tall crown the dome. Painted over during the Ottoman period, when the building was used as a mosque, these frescoes were only uncovered in the 20th century.

Statue of the Sofia, sculpted by Tchapp / Georgi Tschapkanov
The Sofia statue is located at the intersection of Maria Louisa Boulevard and Todor Alexandrov Boulevard. It was erected in 2000 replacing Lenin’s monument, which was removed from the same spot in 1991. It has eight metres height and it stands on a sixteen meters pedestal. It is made by copper and bronze by the sculptor Georgi Chapkanov and the architect Stanislav Konstantinov. The crown symbolizes the power, the wreath the fame and the owl the wisdom. The appearance is also a reference to the humanized picture of the ancient town of Serdica that exist on the old emblem of Sofia and it is taken from an antique coin.

Mezquita

The last surviving mosque in Sofia still in use, the building consists of a large dome and an elegant minaret and takes its name from the neighbouring Central Baths - Banya Bashi literally means ‘many baths'. Dating from 1576, the mosque is said to have been designed by Hadji Mimar Sinan, the leading Ottoman architect of the day. The mosque fell into disuse during Communist rule but is now open for worship once again - you can hear the loudspeakers on the minaret calling the Muslims of the city to prayer five times a day. The mosque is not officially open as a tourist attraction but visitors are welcome outside prayer times, including women, if modestly dressed.

Dia 54 - Serbia ---> Bulgaria

Um dia no trem!

overcast 25 °C
